A note on CII reporting for vessels affected by the Gulf security situation

The safety of crews and vessels operating in or near the Gulf region remains the overriding priority. The current security situation is forcing many vessels to take protective action - waiting outside the Strait of Hormuz, reducing speeds, or rerouting entirely.

Our thoughts are with everyone operating in these conditions.

For operators managing the regulatory implications of these disruptions, it's worth noting that major Flag Administrations have acknowledged these exceptional circumstances. They have advised that situations of this kind may fall within the scope of the exception defined in MARPOL Annex VI, Regulation 3.1.1, which covers emissions necessary for the purpose of securing the safety of a ship.

Affected emissions must still be reported, but may be marked as a voyage exclusion in line with the CII calculation guidelines (G5). We'd encourage any affected operators to contact their flag Administration or verifier for guidance specific to their situation.

For those using OpenOcean STUDIO, the platform supports this process - vessels can mark relevant periods as Emergency and calculate attained CII with the applicable exclusion applied.

If you need any support in reflecting this within OpenOcean STUDIO, our team is here to help.
