How Lloyd's List Intelligence helped OpenOcean STUDIO switch data providers seamlessly

Vessel position data sits at the heart of our OpenOcean STUDIO platform. Operators use it to monitor fleet movements, validate passage plans and understand dynamic operational conditions - so any change to the data behind that view carries a risk. Get it wrong, and customers feel it immediately.

That was the challenge the 90POE team faced when we decided to review our AIS and geographic data providers. Our platform already delivered strong fleet visibility. The question was whether it could do better - improving commercial efficiency and data quality without disrupting a single customer along the way.

Why Lloyd's List Intelligence

After evaluating alternative providers, 90POE chose Lloyd's List Intelligence to supply AIS SeaOrbis vessel position data and Geo Zone data covering ports, terminals and other operational areas.

The decision came down to several positive benefits. The team found the APIs well documented and straightforward to integrate, backed by responsive technical support throughout the evaluation.

Data quality was checked directly and validated against both the previous provider and GPS positions from selected vessels - giving the team confidence before a single line of customer-facing code changed.

A migration nobody noticed

What did change was what the data could do. Adding Lloyd's List Intelligence's Geo Zone data has sharpened onRADAR, giving operators earlier, more precise alerts as vessels approach ports, terminals and other key operational areas.

The takeaway

Migrating a core data dependency is one of the higher-risk changes a maritime tech platform can make. Done well, it's invisible to the people who rely on it.

For 90POE, that meant treating the switch as more than a vendor swap: it was a chance to strengthen OpenOcean STUDIO's foundations while continuing to build the tools that help our customers continue to run simpler, smarter and more sustainable fleets.
